Featured Projects
We have been fortunate to be involved in some very interesting projects over the years. Here is a small sample of a range of work we have undertaken.
Passive Low Energy Earth Home
Designed and built to demonstrate the principles of passive solar design and contemporary rammed earth construction, this home combines thoughtful orientation, thermal mass, natural materials and climate-responsive design to create a comfortable, healthy and energy-efficient living environment. The project illustrates how carefully integrated design can reduce reliance on mechanical heating and cooling while providing a beautiful and durable family home.
Yallah TAFE Green Skills Training Centre
Designed and constructed as a specialist training facility for TAFE NSW, the Green Skills Training Centre demonstrates how contemporary loadbearing mudbrick construction and integrated sustainable design can create comfortable, energy-efficient educational buildings. Working closely with the TAFE Sustainability Officer, the building became both a practical teaching facility and a working demonstration of sustainable building principles.
Condobolin Wiradjuri Study Centre
Earth Building Solutions was engaged to investigate, diagnose and develop repair solutions for deteriorated loadbearing mudbrick buildings at the Condobolin Wiradjuri Study Centre. The project included material testing, development of compatible repair methods, manufacture of replacement mudbricks, onsite training and staged supervision, enabling the local workforce to complete much of the restoration themselves. All earth, sand and aggregate were sourced locally, with only specialist admixtures brought in.
Rita's Cob Cottage
Designed in close consultation with Rita, this compact cob cottage transformed an existing skillion roof into a warm, comfortable and sustainable home. Built beside her daughter's mudbrick home, the cottage was constructed from earth excavated directly from the site using rubble trench footings, local stone subwalls, cob walls and an earthen floor. Built with family, friends and workshop participants, it became a genuine community building project. Moving into the cottage in her eighties, Rita lived there happily for the next seven years.
Workshops
Peter has been conducting earth building workshops since 1998 when he started conducting mudbrick workshops with Shoalhaven Adult Education. Peter has also conducted regular mudbrick workshops for Make It Mudbricks since 2004 and cob workshops with Gudhara Holistic Sanctuary since 2008.
Earth Building Solutions held its first workshops in February
2012. They were a seven day Cob Building workshop at Rocklyn
for Yoga Vic. and a Mudbrick weekend workshop in Nowra.
